The McMahan Law Firm was founded in 1992. Today, the firm, headed by John D. McMahan, a civil trial and medical malpractice specialist, a member of the National Board of Trial Advocacy and a Diplomate in the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys, has lawyers licensed to practice law in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Mr. McMahan, a 1973 graduate of Vanderbilt University, received his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1975. Since receiving his law license in 1976, Mr. McMahan has specialized in trial practice, and in 1994 he became a member of the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and certified as a civil trial specialist. In late 1994, Mr. McMahan became the first Tennessee certified civil trial specialist practicing in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He has co-authored "Trial Advocacy in Tennessee," and he is a frequent lecturer on trial advocacy. Mr. McMahan and his firm have successfully prosecuted cases resulting in settlements and judgments in excess of $3,000,000.00 over the last 18 months. In 1994 his firm obtained the largest judgment ever awarded in Marion County, Tennessee.
In 2001, Mr. McMahan and G. Brent Burks obtained a judgment onf $1.75 million for a man injured at the Chattanooga ChooChoo. This is the largest premises liability verdict rendered in southeast Tennessee.
