Injury at Sea

Our Maritime Attorneys have provided legal representation worldwide for injured fishermen, deckhands, officers, merchant mariners, factory trawlers, crabbers, ferry workers, longshore, all branches of the merchant marines, cruise ship, oil rig workers and recreational boater injuries.
We work with highly qualified marine safety investigators, naval experts, injury experts, Board-certified medical personnel and health care providers, physical capacities experts, and job experts, representing anyone injured at sea or in a maritime situation, to get compensation for present and future losses. Maritime injury is all we do.

Injury At Sea was started by Thomas C. Evans. Mr. Evans has been practicing maritime law since 1975, and began his maritime-related work as a longshoreman on the docks of Seattle in 1964. H.L. George Knowles is a partner with Injury At Sea and an experienced maritime attorney. Mr. Knowles’ background includes time as a crab boat owner/operator as well as a maritime attorney. Eric Dickman is a partner with Injury at Sea who has focused on maritime law since 1984. Mr. Dickman began his legal career with a job in a maritime insurance defense firm, learning how they think, before he switched to representing plaintiffs.

We offer over 80 years of combined experience in maritime legal representation working in association with highly qualified marine safety investigators, naval experts, injury experts, Board-certified medical personnel, physical capacities experts, job experts, and economists. We provide experienced maritime legal representation in all aspects of maritime injury, including injuries at sea and shoreside situations, injured fishermen, deckhands, officers, merchant mariners, factory trawler workers, crabbers, ferry workers, longshoremen, cruise ship crewmembers and passengers, and recreational boaters. Maritime injury work is all we do.

Our history includes litigation and claims representation of injured persons residing throughout the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Canada, Vietnam, Korea, Hong Kong, Central America, and Thailand.

We give our clients experienced claims representation on a contingency-fee basis. In most cases, we do not charge for recovering medical treatment expenses, wages due, and maintenance (living expense) when these are part of a general damages claim. We also offer the financial resources to fund and pay for very substantial case preparation costs, such as the costs of experts in medical, naval, injury, and damage issues.

Our Attorneys:-

Thomas C. Evans

Injury At Sea was founded by Thomas C. Evans. Mr. Evans has been practicing maritime law since 1975, and began his maritime-related work as a longshoreman working on the docks of Seattle in 1965. Tom Evans is a 1970 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Whitman College, and a 1973 graduate of the University of Washington School of Law. Mr. Evans served as Assistant Case Notes Editor, Washington Law Review, 1972-73. Mr. Evans' experience includes counsel for United States Senate Commerce Committee, Senator Warren G. Magnuson; Deputy Prosecutor, King County; Assistant Attorney General, State of Washington, Office of the Attorney General. Mr. Evans is a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, and Maritime Lawyers Section of the State Trial Lawyers, wherein Mr. Evans served as Chair of the Maritime Law Section. Mr. Evans is admitted to practice before all State Courts in the State of Washington, Federal District Trial Courts, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

George Knowles

H. L. George Knowles is a partner with Injury At Sea. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1969. After spending two years in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, George attended law school. He has been a practicing maritime lawyer since graduating from the University of Santa Clara Law School (Cum Laude) in 1973. Mr. Knowles comes from a long line of seafarers and fishermen. He has been a fisherman himself, owning the F/V GRIZZLY, a 125-foot Bering Sea crab boat. The first four years of Mr. Knowles' legal career were spent working for a local marine insurance defense firm before leaving to represent injured seamen. This early experience has given him great insight into the inner workings and thinking of the maritime insurance industry which is invaluable when negotiating settlements on behalf of injured seamen.

Mr. Knowles is a member of the
American Trial Lawyers Association, Washington Trial Lawyers Association and Maritime Lawyers Section of the State Trial Lawyers. He is admitted to practice before all state courts in the State of Washington, United States District Court (federal), the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. In addition to the above, Mr. Knowles frequently acts as mediator of the seamen's personal injury cases at the request of other members of the Maritime Bar.

Eric Dickman

Eric Dickman is a partner with Injury at Sea. He received his J.D. from the University of Puget Sound School of Law (now Seattle University School of Law) in 1984. He then received a Master's Degree (LL.M.) in Law and Marine Affairs from the University of Washington. Mr. Dickman is admitted to practice before all of the State Courts in the States of Alaska, Oregon, New York, and Washington. He is also admitted to practice before The United States Supreme Court; the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; the United States Court of International Trade; and all of the United States District Courts for the States of Alaska, Oregon and Washington.

Throughout his career, Mr. Dickman has focused on maritime law. He started his career in a maritime insurance defense firm, where he learned firsthand how maritime insurance companies think. After a few years he underwent an epiphany. He switched sides, and has represented seaman plaintiffs ever since.

Beyond his practice, Mr. Dickman is active in the legal community. He is a member of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association and past Chair of the Maritime Law Section. Mr. Dickman has published a number of articles on current legal issues, and he is an adjunct professor at
Highline Community College, where he teaches in the paralegal program.
