Douglas L. Carter
Mr. Carter was born on March 25, 1956 in Springfield, Missouri. He attended and graduated from Glendale High School where he was on the swim team, was elected Student Body President and won numerous debate and speech tournaments. He also attended Missouri Boys State and the prestigious Boys Nation program in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Carter graduated in 1978 from the University of Missouri/Columbia, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Honors Interdisciplinary Studies with emphasis in Political Science, Sociology and Biology. He was a member of the Interscholastic Debate Squad, winning his very first tournament as a freshman. That same year, he ran for and was elected President of the of the College of Arts & Sciences Student Government - the largest academic division on campus with over 8,000 students.
After graduating from Mizzou, Mr. Carter entered Duke University School of Law in Durham, N.C. and graduated in 1981. He was named to the Staff of the Duke Law Journal and later served on the Journal's Editorial Board. He also competed interscholastically for two years as a member of the school's National Moot Court Team - demonstrating skills in oral advocacy for which less than 1% of the student body qualifies.
Following law school, Mr. Carter joined Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin & Kahn - a large, well-respected lawfirm in Washington, D.C. where he practiced commercial litigation. During his 4 ½ years at Arent Fox, Mr. Carter handled a series of high visibility cases in the music industry including lawsuits against Motown Records, Arista Records, RCA and MCA which were tried in Phoenix, Arizona and Montgomery County, Maryland.
In December 1985, Mr. Carter returned to the Midwest and became a shareholder in two large Kansas City firms - Linde Thomson Fairchild Kohn & Van Dyke, and Smith Gill Fisher & Butts. In addition to continuing his commercial litigation practice, he defended Ferrellgas and other major propane companies in serious burn, brain damage and death cases from coast to coast.
Mr. Carter founded his current firm in 1996. No longer defending personal injury cases, he now prosecutes meritorious civil actions against health care providers, employers, railroads, municipalities, landlords and other defendants whose conduct falls short of reasonable expectations and the law.
Mr. Carter is happily married, a private pilot, plays jazz piano, and enjoys tennis, golf and snow skiing.
Julianne H. Carter
Julie Carter graduated from the University Missouri - Kansas City School of Law in 1991 where she served
as Comment Editor for the UMKC Law Review. Following graduation, she served as law clerk for the Honorable Don Kennedy on the Missouri Court of Appeals. For the next five years, Julie practiced in the
area of employment discrimination in Kansas City, Missouri at the labor law firm of Jolley, Walsh and Hager.
She joined the Arizona Center for Disability Law in June of 1997 after moving to Phoenix. While at the
Center, she practiced exclusively in the area of disability discrimination law, including representing individuals with disabilities who have faced discrimination in housing, education, employment, public accommodations and transportation.
In 2003, she was selected as a recipient of the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation Fellowship in Public Policy. This one-year fellowship sent her to Washington, DC where she served as disability advisor to United
States Senator Tom Harkin from Iowa. Senator Harkin was the lead sponsor of the Americans with
Disabilities Act, and is the major Senate voice in protecting the rights of people with disabilities.
In 2004, she joined the Law Offices of Douglas L. Carter, P.C. with offices in Kansas City, Missouri and Phoenix, Arizona, and is practicing in the areas of disability discrimination, employment discrimination,
fair housing. Ms. Carter has appeared in the Wall Street Journal and been interviewed on BBC's World Service Radio.
