Background
In the summer of 1973, young Greg Zeuthen was glued to the TV — along with much of the nation — following the historic Watergate hearings. That year, at the age of 13, he decided he wanted to be a lawyer when he grew up. Ironically, his family then lived in Yorba Linda, California, the birthplace of Richard Nixon. It wasn't just Watergate that affected Zeuthen so deeply. The civil rights movement, the war protests, striking farmworkers — he knew he wanted a profession where he would be helping people.
He experienced legal work for the first time as a college student when he was enrolled at Weber State College in Ogden, Utah. His junior and senior years, he worked part time at Utah Legal Services helping with cases involving social services, veterans' affairs and indigent housing. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1981, he entered law school at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. As a law student, he worked for the Clackamas County Office of Community Corrections and supervised former prisoners serving terms of probation. By his second year, he was clerking for the Clackamas County Counsel, getting his hand in cases dealing with employment, land use and contracts. He earned his law degree and passed the Oregon State Bar in 1984.
Fresh from law school, Zeuthen went to work for the general practice firm of Biggs Hutchison Hammond & Walsh in Oregon City. Because the firm had a contract with the Clackamas County cities of West Linn and Gladstone, Zeuthen gained the opportunity to not only defend but also prosecute cases. In 1986, he obtained his first job with a personal injury firm, Haugh & Foote of Portland. He was with that firm for 11 years before moving into solo practice in 1997.
Cases
In his practice, Zeuthen specializes in helping individuals who have been injured through the negligent behavior of others. One case in particular illustrates his steadfast commitment to his clients and his perseverance to gather every bit of evidence to support a case. Pete McHugh, a former high school principal, was struck by a car while he was jogging along a rural road. The impact by the car caused a skull fracture, a brain concussion and loss of memory of events surrounding the collision. Everyone, including the car's driver, told McHugh it was his fault, that he must have been running in the road. That version didn't ring true for the longtime jogger. When he contacted Zeuthen, the trial lawyer listened carefully and agreed there had to be more to the story. Zeuthen studied the collision site, commissioned aerial photos of the scene, contracted with medical experts and gathered reports from witnesses who had seen McHugh on the road that day. Zeuthen built a solid case showing the driver of the car had not been truthful, that his client had been safely running on the side of the road facing traffic when he was struck from behind and, in fact, the driver had been negligent in swerving across a lane of traffic and striking McHugh. Zeuthen presented the evidence during a three day trial and jurors ruled on the client's behalf, presenting an $800,000 award.
Zeuthen is one of the first plaintiff's attorneys to successfully prosecute case on behalf of victims of Lasik eye surgery. Working with Portland colleague Larry Baron, he represents patients who generally should have never been approved for the popular surgery. The case preparation involves documenting scientific evidence showing mistakes and miscalculations made by operating surgeons. Zeuthen isn't able to restore his clients' vision but he is able to help them restore their lives by holding accountable the doctors who injured them. His name often comes up on the web site Vision Surgery Rehab Network where recovering Lasik patients refer dependable attorneys to each other.
Profession
As an active member of the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association, Zeuthen has participated in the group's Publications Committee and is a regular sponsor of the President's Circle and events at the Annual Summer Convention. He is a member of the Multnomah Bar Association and served on the Local Professional Responsibility Committee. He is also a member of the Oregon State Bar and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA). He serves as chair of ATLA's Laser Eye Surgery Malpractice Litigation Group.
Greg Zeuthen has realized the goal he set as a teenager. He now has the expertise and knowledge to help people in the legal arena.
