Founding attorney Jeffrey Berniard brings to the Berniard Law Firm a local perspective to the law in the Gulf Coast region and, as a result, can effectively represent clients not only as a man good at his job but as a fellow member of the community. Born and raised in the state of Louisiana, Mr. Berniard received his Bachelors degree from McNeese State University in Lake Charles and his law degree from New Orleans' own Loyola University. As a result, he has accumulated a lifetime of experience seeing and feeling the various situations and problems that residents of the Gulf Coast have faced over the years.

Earning legal experience at the beginning of his legal experience working pro bono for the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center and later clerking with the District Attorney's office in Lake Charles, Mr. Berniard studied early on the complexities of the court room and the diversity of community needs. After graduation, he worked with several law firms in the New Orleans area in personal injury and real estate before establishing the Berniard Law Firm and focusing on first party insurance disputes.

Established in October of 2005, the Berniard Law Firm immediately went to work handling cases in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. In 2006 alone the firm handled over a hundred first party insurance claims against insurance companies who sought to stonewall claims to save themselves money. Securing hefty settlements for his clients from reluctant insurance companies, Mr. Berniard carved a niche in the New Orleans legal community (profiled here) of defending members of the community from unfair corporate practices put in place to specifically prevent home and property owners from getting the money they deserved.

In this vein, most recently, the Berniard Law Firm helped represent over 70,000 class members in a class action against Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation over payment delays relating to Hurricane Katrina settlements. The eventual settlement secured by the attorneys representing the class against Louisiana Citizens totaled over $35 million. As of late 2009, the Berniard Law Firm has filed over 300 lawsuits and participated in five class actions against insurance companies and corporations. In doing so, the firm has tried to help the Gulf Coast community regain some power against companies that can be overbearing, pressing and unfair in their pursuit to shortchange the average citizen.
