ecause of its utility as a fire-retardant and heat-resistant material with significant material strength, asbestos became a common material in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was used in insulation, drywall joint compound, gaskets, floor tiles, roofing tiles, ropes, and automotive parts such as brake pads, clutch facings, and valve covers. By 1900, however, doctors began reporting a number of significant health risks associated with asbestos exposure, including asbestosis and cancer, and by 1924 a disease had been named after the mineral, asbestosis. Asbestosis was known to cause the death of asbestos workers at very young ages. By the 1930s, asbestos was being linked to cancer as well.
Despite this, asbestos manufacturers continued to utilize the material because asbestos-containing products were bringing in a significant profit. As a result, asbestos became the cause of mesothelioma suffered by hundreds of thousands of American workers and their wives and children, who became sick as a result of asbestos fibers from clothing.
In continuing to use asbestos long after its affects were known, manufacturers, construction firms, mill owners, and other asbestos companies weighed their gain against your risk, making profit off the sickness they knew you might suffer. They never worried what would become of your children who lost their father or mother to mesothelioma. They never worried what would become of your children who lost a parent whose only crime was hugging a father who came home covered in asbestos fibers. But you do worry. It is unfair that you and your family should suffer while these companies continue to enjoy their profit. Although few treatment options are effective in reversing the course of mesothelioma, the law does allow a means by which you can ensure your loved ones are taken care of. We at Parker and Kiely, LLP seek to hold the manufacturers, distributors, and installers of asbestos-related products responsible for the debt they owe your family. We will aggressively pursue your claim, and we will not cease from striving until every family has been justly compensated.
