The firm’s founding partner, Terry Garmey, is one of Maine’s most respected and effective trial lawyers. He has earned a national reputation and has obtained several multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements. In 2011, Terry was named Personal Injury Litigator of the Year for Portland, Maine by Best Lawyers. Terry is also a member of the esteemed invitation-only American College of Trial Lawyers, a society of America’s best litigators, and is the only attorney from Maine to be invited to join the Inner Circle of Advocates, a group of the nation’s most elite plaintiff’s trial attorneys. He has represented clients throughout the country and in Europe.

Terry’s practice primarily concentrates in civil litigation. He represents victims or families of victims injured or killed as a result of the fault of others. He has accumulated a number of seven figure verdicts and settlements including Smith v. Otis, involving the death of an eight year old boy, Tucker Smith. Other significant verdicts have involved a water slide, auto accidents, medical negligence, and defective products.
He is a former member of the Board of Governors of the Maine Trial Lawyers Association, a founding member of the Maine Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates and served on the Professional Ethics Commission of the Board of Overseers of the Bar. Terry has lectured locally, regionally and nationally and has discussed legal issues on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show and on numerous national radio programs.
Prior to establishing Terry Garmey & Associates, Terry spent 33 years with the law offices of Smith Elliott Smith & Garmey, where he served as a partner and helped the firm achieve a national reputation.
While a law student at Boston College Law School Terry was employed by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in Boston, Massachusetts and during his third year of law school served as a trial assistant in the case of Commonwealth v. Susan Saxe, a former Brandeis University student who was placed on the FBI’s most wanted list after she escaped from a bank heist in Brighton, Massachusetts, during which an accomplice had shot and killed a Boston police officer. Terry remained at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office until May of 1978 before moving to Maine.
An actor and member of the Screen Actors Guild, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Mad Horse Theater Company. Terry worked as a disc jockey, teacher and drug counselor before becoming a trial lawyer. For many years, he has volunteered as a speech and mock trial coach and is actively involved in area charities. In his down time you’ll find Terry boating, horseback riding, biking and spending time with his family.
